OscarA. Sedman, miner, rancher, member of the Territorial Legislature.
Sedman became a Master Mason in 1866 and was a member of Virginia
City 1 and Nevada City No. 4.
John Moffitt, came to the United States in 1851. Place of departure for
Montana, Topeka, Kansas; route traveled, across the plains via Bridger
Route, Fort Laramie, Tongue, Big Horn, and Yellowstone Rivers;
arrived at Virginia City, July 10th, 1864. Occupation, miner and deputy
collector of internal revenue. Moffitt was a member of Helena Lodge
No. 3 and served as Secretary in 1867.
Luther C. Lee, during the Civil War he served as a Captain in the
Fifty-second Illinois Volunteer Infantry, leaving the service in the fall
of 1864. He arrived in Virginia City in 1864 and continued work as a
jeweler. Brother Lee was a long time member of the city council. In
September of 1868 he was appointed as Deputy U.S. Marshal for the
1st Judicial District, Montana Territory. He was a member of Nevada
City Lodge No. 1, Montana No. 2 and later Morning Star No. 5 and
served one year as the first Grand Treasurer.
James R. Boyce, during the Civil War he served under General Price
in the Quartermaster’s Department of the Confederate service. He was
a partner in Tootle, Leach & Co., a dry goods–men’s and women’s
clothing mostly, moved to Helena and renamed the firm J. R. Boyce
& Co. Boyce was a member of Morning Star No. 5 and served as
Worshipful Master in 1868, he was present at the organization of the
Montana grand lodge and became Grand Master in 1872. He allied with
the Vigilantes.
Julian M. Knight, arrived in Virginia City in 1866, Knight formed the
Elling, Knight and Company opened a hardware store in the Masonic
Temple. He, and received the degrees of Masonry in Montana Lodge
No. 10 now Montana No. 2, and was raised as a Master Mason on
April 13, 1867. He served as Secretary of the Lodge, 1875 to 1879,
and Treasurer from 1903 to 1910. Brother Knight served as the Grand
Treasurer in 1868. He later served as Grand Master in 1876.
Henry Finnis Edgar, came to Montana from St. Paul, Minnesota; across
the plains via Northern Route; arrived at Fort Benton, September 20th,
1859. He was a miner and farmer. He was a member of the first group
to discover gold at Alder Gulch. Later in life he ranched in Plains.
Charles Arthur Broadwater, arrived in Bannack in 1862. Occupation,
banker and merchant. One of the proprietors of the Diamond R. Freight
line. Broadwater became a Master Mason in 1866 in Helena Lodge No.
3.
