Recent Addition to the Montana Masonic Museum
Not long ago a descendant of
Hugh Duncan come across a
old Masonic document in some
of the family papers and thought
the Montana Masonic Museum
would like the item. The item is
a certificate issued by the Grand
Lodge of Kansas in 1887 to Hugh
Duncan member of the Grand
Lodge of Montana Territory.
Hugh Duncan was raised in
1846 in Scotland, he entered the
Montana Territory in 1864. He was
a Methodist Minister. A member of
Montana Lodge No.9 (originally
Chartered by the Grand Lodge
of Colorado and now Montana
No. 2 of the Grand Lodge of
Montana. Duncan was present at
the formation of the Grand Lodge
of Montana in 1866. He served as
the Grand Chaplain in 1866, 1868,
1870, 1871, 1878 and 1885; and
served as Deputy Grand Master in
1882 and Grand Master in 1883.
The certificate was issued by
the Grand Lodge of Kansas on 29
January 1887 by Grand Master
Silas E. Sheldon.
