Brethren, my theme for the year is to improve by 1%.
The power of small, consistent improvement has long been understood by operative stone masons. Improving by just 1% each day creates remarkable compounding results over time, much like the patient work that turns a rough stone into a perfect ashlar, fit for the temple. Our operative stonemason, ancient ancestors, knew this truth deeply. We see it reflected in nature’s own allegory: just as water’s gentle drips, slowly carve majestic canyons, drip by patient drop, through its unrelenting force on stone. In Masonry, we apply the same principle, chipping away at one imperfection at a time with our working tools, subduing our passions, and improving ourselves in Masonry. Rather than seeking dramatic overnight change, we build systems of gradual refinement in ritual, fellowship, brotherhood, and in the temple we call ourselves.
As we embrace our theme, “Improve by 1%,” let these small, repeatable efforts guide our year ahead. Consistent attendance, thoughtful study, mentoring, and acts of relief will strengthen our lodges and smooth our rough ashlars. Aligned with our ancient landmarks, progressing by 1% compounds over time to strengthen our bonds and make us better men. Constantly bringing us out of darkness and closer to light. Just as our ancient ancestors intended on the path going from rough stones to perfect ashlars.
