John T. Murphy, from Missouri. Departed Colorado traveled, across
the plains; arrived at Virginia City, July 12th, 1864. Occupation,
merchant, banker, and stockman.
Tilghman H. Clewell, from Allentown, PA, Went to Colorado in 1860.
Departed Central City, CO across the plains via Cherokee trail and Fort
Bridger; arrived at Bannack, April 24th, 1863. Occupation, merchant.
Member House of Representatives, Ninth Session, 1876, Territorial
Legislative Assembly. Postmaster of Helena. 1891-5. Clewell became
a Master Mason in 1869 in Morning Star No. 5.
Warren C. Gillette, from New York. Departed Illinois, traveled, up
the Missouri River to Fort Union, overland; arrived at Montana City
in September, 1862. Occupation, freighter, merchant, and sheepman.
Member of Council, He was a member of the 1870 Washburn–
Langford–Doane Expedition. Member of the Eleventh and Extra
Sessions, 1879; Thirteenth Session, 1883; Sixteenth Session, 1889,
Territorial Legislative Assembly. Member Constitutional Convention,
1889, Twelfth District, Lewis and Clarke County.
 James M. Smith, from North Carolina, departed from Tennessee;
traveled across the plains arrived at Alder Gulch, July 1st, 1864.
Occupation, farmer.
James Whitlatch, from Pennsylvania, departed Colorado traveled
across the plains via Nevada and Idaho; arrived at Helena, September
17th, 1864. Occupation, miner. Made Mineral Entry No. 1, October
15th, 1867, for 200 feet on the Park Lode in Edgerton County. Whitlatch
was a member of Helena Lodge No. 3.
Charles Rumley, from New York, departed Illinois traveled up the
Missouri River arrived at Fort Benton, June 17th, 1862. Occupation,
Jeweler. Mr. Rumley was elected an active member of the Historical
Society of Montana in 1873, served as their librarian from 1875 to
1885. Assayer in charge United States Assay Office at Helena.
John Potter, from Maine, departed Minnesota traveled across the
plains via Northern Route, Red River of the North, Fort Abercrombie,
and Mouse and Milk Rivers and arrived at Fort Benton, August 27th,
1862. Occupation, merchant. First postmaster of Helena, 1865-70.
Potter became a Master Mason in 1868 in Summit Lode No. 10.
James L. Fisk, from NewYork. Departed from Fort Ridgeley, Minnesota
traveled, across the plains via Northern Route, Forts Abercrombie and
Union, Milk and Marias Rivers and arrived near Fort Benton, September
5th, 1862. Captain Fisk was in charge of government expeditions, for
the protection of emigrants, via the Northern Overland Route.
