John J. Mangen (1955-2021)

                            Most Worshipful Grand Master 2010-2011

Most Worshipful Past Grand Master John J. Mangen was born in Miles City, Montana on August 29,
1955, the middle son of Chris and Loretta Mangen. He grew up on the family ranch just north of Broadus.
He attended school in Broadus and after graduation went to college and graduated with a degree in
electronics. After college he became “a jack of all trades.” Brother John made his living as a carpenter
for a short while and then worked as a mechanic for a farm equipment dealer for a year or two. In 1978
he returned to the ranch to raise his two children.

Most Worshipful Brother John started his Masonic life in 1991 and went on to serve as Worshipful
Master of Powder River Lodge No. 135 in 1997. He joined the Order of Eastern Star, Custer Chapter No.
25 in 2002. He was also a member of Al Bedoo Shrine Center in Billings. Brother John’s wife Mary Alice
joined the OES in 2010. His father had been a very loyal Mason for 57 year and a 56 year member of the
OES. MW Brother John’s mother Loretta was a 57 year member of the OES.

When Worshipful Brother John was elected Master of his Lodge he did some dirt work on the top
of a high hill overlooking his home. Once it was leveled large boulders were placed for use as an altar
and for the Master and Warden’s chairs. Tree stumps were cut for seating and podiums. When it was
finished, Brother John along with his officers were installed at this scenic spot. Every year since then
the brothers who have been elected Master of Powder River Lodge No. 135 have had their installation
on that same hill, which is referred to as “Flintstone Lodge.” Several churches have used this location
for Easter services as well as other unique gatherings. After the ceremonies, it became a tradition to go
down to John and Mary Alice’s house for a pitch in barbecue with lots of food and fellowship. John and
Mary Alice exchanged their wedding vows at that same outdoor Lodge above their home.

Most Worshipful Past Grand Master Mangen laid down his working tools and passed to the Celestial
Lodge above on October 24, 2021. He will be missed. Services will be held in Broadus at the Congregational
Church on Saturday, October 30th at 2pm.
